Make Your House Pump Work Better & Last Longer

5 Tips: Show your household water pump a little TLC

Show your pump some TLC. Irrigear Goulburn shares 5 Tips to ensure better pump performance, fewer repairs and longer pump life – saving you stress, time and money in the long run.

We all hate it when something breaks down. And when they do it can be a real pain in the back pocket. It’s the reason we garage our car and check the oil, update our antivirus software and take our vitamins each day. Your pump needs some TLC as well.

These 5 Tips will ensure that you aren’t left high and dry when you least need it. And your back pocket will thank you too.

Tip 1. Protect Your Pump.
Is your pump out of the weather? Moisture, heat and cold are not good for your pump. Build or buy a pump cover. In our Goulburn region also make sure that the pipework is insulated to prevent freezing.

Plastic pump covers are relatively inexpensive and can be trimmed to fit most house pumps. Otherwise some Colorbond® steel sheeting and a timber frame can be screwed together to make a simple pump house. Don’t forget that you will need access to your pump at some stage, so don’t make it too heavy or tight fitting. Leave some room for air circulation and make sure that it is ventilated as well.

Tip 2. Fix Leaks.
Is your pump leaking? A leaking pump not only wastes water, it will hasten and eventually cause an untimely (and expensive) end.
A leak might simply be a loose fitting, a pump seal, or just water dripping onto the pump. Water leaks can get into the motor and bearings – and that never ends well. Insects and pests of all types love leaks as well (why not, the water's free). Check to see the source of the leak and fix it if you can. For a pump seal leak it may be a good idea to take your pump in to Irrigear Goulburn for a checkup.

Tip 3. Listen.
Is your pump noisier than usual? That’s not good. Listen to your pump once in a while so that you are familiar with how it normally sounds. A sudden or gradual change in the sound of your pump (louder motor noise, gravelly pump noise etc can indicate a problem in the making. Failing bearings make a lot of noise and cause the pump to run hotter than usual. Damaged impellers are also noisy and will eventually grind to a standstill. If your pump doesn’t 'sound right', get it in for a checkup quick smart! This could save you both inconvenience and financial heartache down the track.

Tip 4. Control Pests.
Have insects taken over? One day they will take over the world, but first they want to take over your pump.
For various reasons pests love pumps – clean the wasps away from the cooling vanes on the pump motor, and spray with a surface insecticide to keep ants and earwigs out of the switches and controllers. A more extensive spray for spiders and wasps makes it nicer if you need a service visit too.

Tip 5. Frequent Stops & Starts?
Is your pump starting and stopping a lot? Like us, pumps have a finite number of starts, so don’t waste them. If your pump is starting up when it shouldn’t you may have a leak somewhere in the pipework. If it starts and stops rapidly, your pressure tank may need attention. If it starts and stops all day every day, your foot valve or check valve may need replacing. If you are not sure call Irrigear Goulburn and we will help you diagnose the problem. But don’t ignore it, your pump is aging quickly.

Advice. Products. Solutions.
Taking these simple small preventative measures and knowing your pumps normal behaviour will save you time and money in the long term and could add years onto the lifespan of your pump investment. Most pump issues can be rectified quickly and cheaply if they are addressed early enough. Irrigear Goulburn can help with advice, testing and the maintenance you need to make sure you get the best value from your house pump system.
